Inspired by the rogue Elizabethan players that once entertained audiences out of doors and at the Globe theatre, a Company of Fools has built a reputation as a highly physical troupe that performs interactive shows both indoors and out. Our award-winning shows have toured all across Canada, from Halifax to Vancouver to Yellowknife (and that one time in China).

We are a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres, which means we contract our artists under the Canadian Theatre Agreement and pay them a standard unionized living wage to share their skills and talents with our beloved audience.

The Fools are best known for our Torchlight Shakespeare Series – praised by critics and audiences alike – during which 90-minute versions of Shakespeare’s hits are played by a nimble cast of 3-6 performers in a fast-paced, engaging and Foolishly interactive manner in community parks.

The Position

A Company of Fools is seeking an inspiring Interim Artistic Director to lead Ottawa’s original professional Shakespeare company for a 1-year term, with a possibility of extension.

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors of a Company of Fools, the Artistic Director (AD) is responsible for implementation of all artistic and production activities of the Company during 2019, as well as preliminary planning for the artistic vision of 2020, subject to the Board’s approval.

Both the AD and the General Manager (GM) report directly to the Board of Directors and are jointly responsible for the creative, entrepreneurial, and strategic leadership of the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Artistic Policy

  • Implements the artistic vision of the Company for 2019 as approved by the Board in the Strategic Plan and Budget
  • Presents programs that balance the vision of the Company with financial sustainability
  • Fosters the continued growth and development of artistic excellence
  • Ensures that all activities are consistent with the goals and bylaws of the Company
  • Participates with members of the Board in creating long range policy

2. Artistic Activities

  • Selects productions for the artistic season(s), and budgets for them in consultation with the General Manager (GM)
  • Presents production proposals to the Board for approval
  • Engages directors, designers, actors and other artists for all production activities within current budgetary guidelines
  • Responsible for marketing and creative development
  • Ensures that all artistic activities meet the quality objectives of the Company as outlined in the Strategic Plan
  • Evaluates and reports on the degree to which the long-term artistic goals and objectives are being met

3. Staff Management

  • Solicits and approves proposals for senior artistic staff positions
  • Solicits and approves proposals for senior production staff positions
  • Provides final approval of proposals of performers and assistants, as submitted by senior artistic staff
  • Provides final approval of all artistic and production staff contracts, as prepared by the GM
  • Provides leadership through communication and cooperation among artistic staff, and between artistic staff and production and administrative staff
  • Ensures that all staff meet the artistic goals of the Company
  • Helps create a positive, open, respectful, and accountable working environment, including overseeing working conditions, management, and regular performance appraisal of staff under the AD’s authority

4. Relationship with the GM

  • Works in partnership with the GM in the leadership and management of the Company
  • Provides input on the season’s production costs to the GM for budgeting purposes
  • Monitors the execution of production budgets in consultation with the GM
  • Provides appropriate concepts and materials to GM in order to prepare all necessary marketing tools and news releases as required by the marketing plan

5. Public Relations

  • Along with the GM and Board, acts as an ambassador for a Company of Fools, actively engaging the broader artistic community, fostering constructive relationships with peer organizations across Canada and internationally, as well as with government, donors, audiences, media, and the wider public
  • Participates in all interviews, photo sessions, marketing projects and meetings as required
  • Develops relationships within the community, leading as the public face of the Company
  • Prepares an annual report to be presented at the Annual General Meeting

6. Personal Development

  • The AD may accept outside engagements that do not conflict with primary duties and responsibilities related to the Company
  • The AD is responsible for furthering his or her personal development by attending relevant productions, workshops, classes, meetings and conferences at a local, national and international level within budgetary guidelines
  • The AD shall continually research areas relevant to and which advance the Company and the theatre arts

7. Grants and Fundraising

  • Participates in the creation and development of objectives and working plans for the continued artistic growth of the Company
  • Plays a key role in supporting fundraising strategy and in fostering strong relationships with existing and potential funders
  • Is responsible for writing all relevant artistic components of grant applications by the deadline, and must approve and sign all grant applications prior to their submission (where required)
  • Attracts and cultivates relationships with significant donors and stakeholders
  • Attends meetings of the Board as required and reports on all artistic items

8. Staff Development

  • Encourages the professional development of all staff
  • May provide relevant professional development opportunities where appropriate, within budgetary guidelines

Candidate Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or experiential equivalent
  • Deep knowledge of the works of Shakespeare
  • Management level experience including leading and managing staff and stakeholders, delegating and multi-tasking
  • A strong track record of collaboration, leadership and strong team building and a commitment to support the growth and development of artists
  • Experience grant writing and reporting
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills; experience working with a Board is an asset
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with Donor Management tracking and software
  • Applicant should be familiar with Google Docs and similar office management software
  • Applicant should have experience working with MailChimp
  • Bilingualism (FR/EN) is an asset
