subDevision 2019: Eyes on the Future

This November, eight local theatre companies will descend on La Nouvelle Scène Gilles Desjardins in downtown Ottawa, inviting audience members to join them on a theatrical adventure unlike any other. It’s subDevision 2019! Taking place amidst an epic party, discover each piece as the artists imagine what the future holds. Creative solutions never looked so cool.

What is subDevision?

subDevision is a site-specific theatrical event that exists to bring together diverse artists and independent theatre companies to create unique works of performance art that push the boundaries of the spaces that situate them. Each piece is only 10-minutes long, and is inspiredsubDevision event by the assigned venue. subDevision is a theatrical experience framed by an epic party; audience members convene in a central location with a bar and dance floor and are encouraged to see as many shows as they wish, weaving through La Nouvelle Scène Gilles Desjardins and discovering adventure around every corner! subDevision 2019 is a collaboration with Théâtre Catapulte.

Modelled after Vancouver’s HIVE event (named to reflect how audience members travelled through the space like bees before returning to the central party space), subDevision exists to pave the way for further innovative creation in the Ottawa theatre scene. subDevision 2019 is made possible by our funders and partners, which include the Canada Council for the Arts, Ottawa Arts Council, and the City of Ottawa.

About the Shows

subDevision 2019 includes 8 original pieces by local theatre companies in both English and French. Companies include: Aplombusrhombus, Théâtre Triangle Vital (with the support of Créations In Vivo), Red Rabbits Theatre,THUNK!theatre, Théâtre Rouge Écarlate and Toasted Theatre, as well as artists André Robillard and Bénédicte Bélizaire, and Elaine Juteau. Many of these companies have been lauded for past works and have scooped multiple awards.

What’s new this year? Inspired by our venue, La Nouvelle Scène Gilles Desjardins, subDevision 2019 will focus on the theme of Futurity. This could mean the future of urban design, indigeneity, gender, education, politics, relationships, the environment - the list goes on and on. While past iterations of the event have seen theatre artists collaborate with artists from across Ontario, as well as visual artists, this is the first time that all companies will be creating on a theme. This is also our first collaboration At subDevisionwith Théâtre Catapulte, one of Ottawa’s most exciting Francophone theatre companies.

About the Team

Co-Directors and producing team Sarah Conn and Kate Smith are both co-founders of the event, and have been involved since 2010 when subDevision first surfaced as an idea to highlight the work of local independent theatre companies and allow for experimentation. Conn is an award-winning director, producer and creator whose performances, installations and live art, including most recently Trophy, have toured nationally and internationally. Smith is Artistic Director of Skeleton Key Theatre, an acclaimed company that creates and produces original immersive theatrical experiences. Their combined producing experience and history of working in site-specific theatre make them the perfect pair to lead this year’s event.
