Avis, from the Latin word for bird, is a ten-piece photographic series that uses young adults as the subjects to reflect on the human transitional journey from childhood to adulthood. Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution states that “all life is related and has descended from a common ancestor: the birds and the bananas, the fishes and the flowers—all related.’ This understanding of evolutionary theory is not as widely appreciated as it should be. Most humans consider themselves to be far superior to our fellow creatures in the animal kingdom. Avis explores Darwin’s theory and the rift between adolescents and adults by comparing teenagers to an iconically weak and frail animal, a dove. It is intended, through the work, to provoke the viewer to see their humanity as part of an evolutionary chain; as bird is connected to human, so adolescent is connected to adult. Gwyneth Orr is a seventeen-year-old student at Canterbury High School’s dramatic arts program. After developing a passion for photography and film at a very young age, Gwyneth enrolled in part-time classes at SPAO (School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa) to further understand the technicalities of the medium. Gwyneth plans to continue exploring conceptual photography, and is excited for what the future holds for aspiring artists.

Presented in partnership with the School of Photographic Arts: Ottawa and the Ottawa Arts Council.
