….Canadian-Colombian Claudia Salguero is an Ottawa community-engaged artist, award-winning digital artist and Latin jazz-folk singer. Claudia has created over 35 murals and led a wide-range of community arts and culture projects in Ottawa for groups of diverse ages and ethno-cultural backgrounds encouraging community integration and self-awareness. Claudia is a professional photographer (1990) and a digital artist (2004). Since 2006 she is an international Corel Painter Elite Master. She is also a MASC artist and board member of Arts Network Ottawa. ..Artiste canado-colombienne membre de la communauté artistique d’Ottawa, Claudia Salguero est une chanteuse de musique latine jazz-folk lauréate d’un prix décerné aux artistes numériques. Claudia a créé plus de 35 murales et mené un large éventail de projets artistiques et culturels locaux à Ottawa pour des groupes d’âge et d’origine ethnoculturelle variés, favorisant l’intégration et la conscience de soi. Claudia est une photographe professionnelle (1990) et artiste numérique (2004). Depuis 2006, elle fait partie du groupe international de Maîtres Painter Élite. ….Are you from Ottawa and how did you get involved in the Ottawa arts community? ..Êtes-vous native d’Ottawa ? Depuis quand vous impliquez-vous dans la communauté artistique locale ? ….
….I am from Bogotà, the capital of Colombia. I moved to Ottawa twenty years ago in 2001. It was quite a journey because I had to start learning English. I arrived with my portfolio as a professional photographer and the first thing I did was look for the best ways to connect with photographers in town. I became part of CAPIC and was the first professional woman photographer in the Ottawa chapter. ..Je suis originaire de Bogotá, capitale de la Colombie. Je suis déménagée à Ottawa il y a 20 ans, en 2001. Ce fut tout un voyage, car j’ai dû apprendre l’anglais ! Armée de mon portfolio de photographe professionnelle, j’ai d’abord exploré les meilleurs moyens de rencontrer les photographes de la ville. En devenant membre de CAPIC, je suis devenue la première femme photographe professionnelle de la section d’Ottawa. ….
….I became a professional digital artist in 2007, an Elite Corel Painter Artist, and sponsored by Hewlett Packard. I spent some years combining photography and digital arts and as a certified Corel Painter Instructor. At one point, I was able to work with community developers and discovered that my work with the communities was more rewarding than anything else. I dedicated my time, effort and knowledge of different kinds of art to the service of the community and that has been really amazing. ..Mon parcours d’artiste numérique professionnelle a débuté en 2007 en devenant artiste numérique professionnel. J’ai ensuite obtenu le titre d’Artiste Elite Corel Painter pour ensuite être commanditée par Hewlett Packard. Durant quelques années, j’ai combiné photographie et arts numériques puis j’ai obtenu ma certification d’instructrice Corel Painter. J’ai ensuite commencé à travailler avec des gens qui s’adonnent au développement communautaire. J’ai découvert combien il est gratifiant de travailler avec les communautés. Plus que tout autre chose ! J’ai consacré mon temps, mes efforts et mes connaissances de diverses disciplines artistiques au service de la communauté. Ce fut vraiment formidable ! ….

….How would you describe your artistic practice? ..Comment décririez-vous votre art ? ….
….All my life, it’s been based on curiosity and exploration. Being a Community Engaged Artist is a practice that allows me to express myself through the voices of the community. I’ve been able to use my murals as my tool for activism, to be able to talk about my thoughts on immigration, diversity, justice, environmental issues. My murals are the reflection of conversations I have with the community but also a medium that we develop together. Seeing people interacting and changing the ways they see each other, to me that is the main purpose of my murals. ..La curiosité et l’exploration inspirent mon art depuis toujours. Être une artiste engagée dans la communauté permet de m’exprimer à travers les voix de la communauté. Mes peintures murales deviennent un outil de militantisme pour exprimer mes idées sur l’immigration, la diversité, la justice et les questions environnementales. Mes murales reflètent mes conversations avec la communauté, mais constituent aussi un moyen que l’on développe ensemble. L’objectif principal de mes peintures murales : voir les gens interagir et changer la façon dont ils se perçoivent les un·es les autres. ….

….From a space point of view, you can embellish a city, transform corners that need to be transformed. It’s also a part of history. Murals and graffiti tell the story of a city and its citizens. They send profound messages like my mural, Mariposa, on Bank Street. It is an invitation to erase judgment and fear from each other, as we see is happening since the pandemic started. ..D’un point de vue spatial, c’est une façon d’embellir une ville en transformant des secteurs en mal d’amour. Il y a aussi un aspect historique. Les peintures murales et les graffitis racontent l’histoire d’une ville et de ses citoyen·nes. Ils transmettent des messages profonds comme ma fresque, Mariposa, sur Bank Street. Il s’agit d’une invitation à dissiper le jugement et la peur que l’on entretient à l’égard d’autrui, comme on le constate depuis le début de la pandémie. ….
….Community engaged murals create a sense of belonging in people. They are an opportunity for people to meet each other and understand that although we look and think differently, we are all the same and have the same fears and dreams. I think that is the mission of community work: to bring people together. Murals are an incredible tool for community transformation and empowerment. The power of community art is unmeasurable. ..Les peintures murales communautaires créent un sentiment d’appartenance. Elles permettent aux gens de se rencontrer et de comprendre que, malgré nos apparences et nos pensées différentes, nous sommes les mêmes. Nous entretenons les mêmes peurs et les mêmes rêves. Selon moi, le travail communautaire a pour mission de rassembler les gens. La peinture murale constitue un outil incroyable de transformation et d’autonomisation de la communauté. Le pouvoir de l’art communautaire est incommensurable ! ….

….It was really wow, especially because it happened during the pandemic. I was offering free workshops online, and because of them, I was able to start working again, but it wasn't easy. Receiving this recognition was a big push. It was like, “Yes, you are doing good, keep going! You can do it!” ..C’était vraiment « wow » ! Surtout parce que c’est arrivé pendant la pandémie. Mes ateliers gratuits en ligne m’ont permis de recommencer à travailler, mais ce n’était pas facile. Recevoir cette reconnaissance a été d’une aide précieuse. C’était comme me dire « Oui, tu te débrouilles bien, continue ! Tu peux le faire ! » ….
….This award also confirms my mission and my practice. Anywhere I go, I can say this is the award I received during the pandemic no less. It takes tenacity, consistency, and strength to be an artist. Receiving an award like this one gives you the strength to keep doing it because you don’t know what’s going to happen in the future. I am an immigrant and a mature woman and when it comes to inspiring people, I think this is important. When you say you’re a muralist, most people expect you to be a young man, and I’m not and it not only makes me feel proud but is inspiring young and mature immigrant women. It is not easy but yes, you can do it. ..Ce prix confirme également ma mission et ma pratique. Partout où je vais, je peux dire voici le prix que j’ai reçu pendant la pandémie, rien de moins. Il faut de la ténacité, de la constance et de la force pour être artiste. Recevoir un prix comme celui-ci nous incite à continuer, car on ne peut prédire l’avenir. Je suis une immigrée et une femme mûre. Je crois important d’inspirer les gens. Quand on se présente comme muraliste, la plupart s’attendent à voir un jeune homme, ce que je ne suis pas ! Cela me rend non seulement fière, mais inspire aussi d’autres femmes immigrées, jeunes ou d’âge mûr. Ce n’est pas facile, mais oui, on peut le faire ! ….
