….Maria Sabaye Moghaddam, otherwise known as Maria Saba, is a devoted artist and brilliantly versatile woman. She considers herself a writer first, but she communicates stories through dance and oral storytelling as well. Her versatility includes more than just artistic pursuits. Maria has contributed to the world of science, specifically theoretical chemistry. Born and raised in Iran, Maria's inspiration for art and storytelling is rooted in her heritage. She has come to know and love Ottawa and our artists, describing the local arts scene as varied, interesting, and vibrant. ..Artiste engagée et brillamment polyvalente, Maria Sabaye Moghaddam, alias Maria Saba, se voit avant tout comme une écrivaine, qui raconte des histoires aussi par la danse et le conte. Outre la création artistique, elle met sa polyvalence au service de la science en général et de la chimie théorique en particulier. Iranienne d’origine, Maria s’inspire de la culture qui a bercé son enfance pour s’exprimer par l’art et le conte. Ayant appris à connaître et à aimer Ottawa et ses artistes, elle trouve ce milieu artistique diversifié, captivant et dynamique. ….
….Maria’s many artistic disciplines influence one another, as do her respective experience in art and science. Everything she does, dance, storytelling, and science, all influence her writing. She says that science helps her stay detached, logical and disciplined, but art seems to help her become more free and creative. All these are very important qualities to maintain as a writer. One must be detached and rational to maintain a consistent and realistic story, but a writer mustn’t limit themselves to objective reality and has to take creative liberties to create a unique and compelling world. Dance has helped her explore the world beyond oral and literary storytelling and allows her to tell them visually. Her stories are inspired by her background and experience because they’ve shaped how she sees the world. However, sometimes there’s just a spark deep in her mind, the root of which is unknown, but that grows within her mind and eventually becomes art. ..Ses nombreuses disciplines artistiques s’entrelacent, à l’instar de ses expériences de l’art et de la science. Sa pratique de la danse, du conte et de la science se traduit dans son écriture. La science l’aide à rester objective, logique et disciplinée, et l’art semble lui donner un surcroît de liberté et de créativité — toutes des qualités essentielles pour une écrivaine. Si le détachement et la raison permettent de constituer une trame cohérente et réaliste, l’écrivaine doit combiner son objectivité à sa liberté créative pour créer un univers singulier et captivant. La danse l’a aidée à sonder un monde au-delà de la parole et de l’écrit qu’elle interprète par la gestuelle. Ses contes s’inspirent des expériences qui ont façonné sa vision du monde. Parfois, jaillit en elle une étincelle de source inconnue qui prend forme dans son esprit pour se métamorphoser en art. ….

….Maria's involvement with the Council started in 2006 when she heard then Executive Director Peter Honeywell speak at a forum about reviving the arts in Canada and curating a specifically Canadian arts scene. Maria knew about Canada’s arts scene, but she learned a lot about the history of it that day and she became a member of the Council shortly after. She believes that the city should be doing more to bring its amazing artists and writers to the forefront. She also believes in praising independent artists, which I must agree with considering the amount of work they have to do both artistically and promotionally. Maria told me that she likes the diversity in the art here, which isn’t surprising coming from a person whose own art career is uncommonly diverse. She pointed out how we have both popular, alternative, and underground art scenes, which she described as “different threads”. Ottawa has quite an enormous variety in art, somehow it seems to provide something of interest to everyone. ..Maria a noué avec le Conseil en 2006, après avoir entendu Peter Honeywell, alors directeur général du CAO, prôner, lors d’un forum, la vivification des arts au Canada et l’essor d’une scène artistique typiquement canadienne. Même si elle connaissait le milieu artistique du Canada, elle en a appris beaucoup ce jour-là sur son histoire, et elle s’est jointe au Conseil peu de temps après. Selon elle, la ville devrait en faire plus pour mettre à l’avant-scène ses artistes et gens de lettres. Elle juge primordial d’applaudir les artistes indépendant(e)s, ce qui rejoint mon sentiment, vu l’intensité artistique et promotionnelle qu’ils doivent déployer. Elle dit aimer la diversité de l’art à Ottawa. Pas étonnant venant d’une personne dont le parcours artistique est remarquablement diversifié! Elle souligne que notre scène artistique est à la fois populaire, alternative et marginale, ce qu’elle nomme ses « différents courants ». Tout le monde semble trouver son compte dans l’abondante diversité artistique qu’offre Ottawa. ….
….In 2020, Maria received PEN Canada's Humber College Writers-in-Exile Scholarship to work on a collection of short stories that will soon be available. She was also awarded the Scoundrel Time’s first Editor’s Choice Award in 2018, and it’s good to see that her hard work and talent aren’t going unrecognized. Maria Saba is a descriptive and evocative writer. Her real-life, personal inspirations add sincerity and authenticity to her beautiful stories. I encourage you to invest your time in reading Maria’s work, whether it be one of many in a plethora of articles and interviews, books, and short stories. I look forward to the day when I can witness her storytelling in dance. ..Maria a obtenu la bourse 2020 de PEN Canada-Humber College Writers-in-Exile pour l’écriture d’un recueil de nouvelles qui sera publié sous peu. Un titre publié dans Temps du scélérat a remporté en 2018 l’Editor’s Choice Award. Quel plaisir de voir son travail et son talent ainsi récompensés! Cette écrivaine descriptive et évocatrice s’inspire de son vécu pour imprégner ses fabuleux récits de vérité et d’authenticité. Je vous invite à parcourir ses écrits, dont ses nombreux articles et entrevues, ses livres et ses nouvelles. J’espère bientôt la voir interpréter ses contes par la danse. ….
