….Antoine L Collins is a new member of the Ottawa Arts Council. A lawyer turned jazz singer/songwriter/entertainer, he was born on the outskirts of Chicago in Gary, Indiana. In addition to Jazz performances, he has an impressive musical theatre resume which includes: Ragtime, A Chorus Line, RENT, Little Shop of Horrors and Hairspray. ..Antoine L Collins est membre du Conseil des arts d’Ottawa depuis cette année. ….How did you get involved in the Ottawa arts community? ..Quand avez-vous commencé à vous impliquer dans la communauté artistique locale? ….
….When I immigrated to Ottawa from the States in 2009, I had just finished presenting two visual arts shows in Washington, DC. Once in Ottawa, I was very keen to find out what the local arts scene had to offer. A friend at the time was sitting on the board of directors for SAW Gallery and convinced me to get involved. A year later I was sitting on the board myself as treasurer. SAW Gallery was my first introduction to the Ottawa arts community, and from there I moved into the musical theatre community and the Ottawa jazz/music community, where I finally landed. ..Lorsque j’ai immigré à Ottawa des États-Unis en 2009, je venais de présenter deux expositions d’arts visuels à Washington DC. Une fois à Ottawa, j’étais très soucieux de découvrir la scène artistique locale. Un ami qui était membre du conseil d’administration de la Galerie SAW m’a convaincu de m’y impliquer. Un an plus tard, je participais du CA comme trésorier. La Galerie SAW était mon introduction à la communauté artistique d’Ottawa. De là, j’ai commencé à participer au théâtre musical et dans la musique et le jazz, où j’ai abouti. ….
….Has the pandemic impacted your artistic practice, and if so, how? ..Comment la pandémie a-t-elle touché votre pratique artistique? ….
….Like most artists, the pandemic has slowed down my artistic endeavour quite a bit, for instance it’s impossible to hold live shows. Before the pandemic, I was also just starting to record a new music project, but that too I have had to put on hold. I have to admit, I’ve struggled to motivate myself creatively during the pandemic, while at the same time, I realize that I may never have another opportunity like this to create art. As I mentioned, I am working on my third full-length album, which will feature all original songs. I try to force myself to write at least one or two lines every day. Some days it’s good and other days what I write needs further work, but the process has been amazing. ..Comme la plupart des artistes, la pandémie a ralenti mes projets artistiques. Par exemple, c’est impossible de présenter un spectacle. Avant la pandémie, je commençais l’enregistrement d’un nouveau projet musical, mais cela aussi a été mis en suspens. Je dois admettre que j’avais du mal à me motiver créativement au cours de la crise, en même temps je réalise que je n’aurais peut-être jamais une telle occasion pour créer de l’art. Comme je l’ai souligné, je travaille sur mon troisième album complet de chansons originales. Je me force de composer une ou deux lignes chaque jour. Certains jours, ça va bien, d’autres jours je dois réviser ce que j’ai écrit, néanmoins le processus est étonnant. ….

….No matter the art form I have pursued—visual arts, acting, film, or music—the impact on my life has been tremendous. Art has gotten me through some very difficult times, and has allowed me to enjoy many amazing experiences in my life. Being involved in the arts, and in particular the Ottawa arts community has made me feel right at home here, because they welcomed me with open arms. What an amazing family we have here! ..Peu importe la forme d’expression artistique que j’ai poursuivie — que ce soit les arts visuels, le théâtre, le cinéma ou la musique — l’impact a été considérable. L’art m’a permis de traverser des temps très difficiles et de jouir d’incroyables expériences. Être impliqué dans les arts, particulièrement dans la communauté artistique d’Ottawa, me fait sentir à l’aise et accueilli à bras ouverts. Quelle famille incroyable que nous avons ! ….
