….Ottawa-based Rwandan Canadian singer-songwriter Empress Nyiringango is a self-taught musician showcasing the self-coined Jablur sound, which stands for jazz, blues, and Rwandan. This distinctive fusion features Rwanda’s oldest instrument “Inanga" (Zither) and contemporary music sounds. Saddened by the heinous crimes of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, she embarked on an arduous healing musical journey to convey messages of resilience, compassion, hope, unity, and peace to the world. Empress Nyiringango is inspired by love, hardships, and many great artists across the globe. her second album has been nominated for the Canadian Folk Music Award 2024 in the category of Global Roots Album of the Year. She performs and provides music workshops for residents in long-term care through Radical Connections. She holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Ottawa; she is also a teacher, freelance actress, and a storyteller. ..L'auteure-compositrice-interprète canadienne d'origine rwandaise Empress Nyiringango, établie à Ottawa, est une musicienne autodidacte qui met en valeur le son Jablur, qui signifie jazz, blues et rwandais. Notably, Maya has shared stages with luminaries like Keke Palmer, Masai Ujiri, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. As the acclaimed author of the poetry novel "Warriors in Broad Daylight," Maya is also the visionary founder of Spoken in the City Poetry Slam, Tell 'Em Girl Women’s Spoken Word Showcase, and Loud Black Girls—empowering Ottawa poets to authentically express themselves. A two-time champion of Ottawa’s largest poetry slam, OG500, and 5x slam champion, Maya proudly holds the title of the 2023 Canadian Individual Spoken Word Champion.
