….Recipient of the 2020 Project X Photography Award, John Healey grew up along the St. Lawrence River in Brockville, Ontario. His work has been shown nationally at the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival in 2017 and 2020. His image Jug Top, from his Plastic Beach series was selected as Honourable Mention in the 2019 Optic Nerve competition held by Blackflash magazine and was included in the recent exhibition Common Waters at Cambridge Art Galleries. Healey’s Michigan Man After Arcimboldo, also from the Plastic Beach series, was awarded the Grand Prize from Figureworks 2019. ….Being involved with photography on a day-to-day basis has developed my appreciation for the sheer effort that creative people need to exercise in order to communicate their ideas. Developing an idea and carrying it through to completion can be a real struggle. I rarely see people create a work instantly, most will toil and fail. Teaching for me is assisting the person to find a way past these failures and to realise their idea. I encourage students to play and explore ideas thoroughly. You can’t fail if you’re playing, only learn. This is how I approach my own work. ..M’impliquer dans la photographie au quotidien m’a permis d’apprécier l’effort que doivent fournir les créatifs pour communiquer leurs idées. Développer une idée et la mener à bien peut s’avérer un véritable combat. Je vois rarement les gens créer une œuvre instantanément. La plupart travaillent dur et échouent. Enseigner pour moi, c’est aider la personne à trouver un moyen de surmonter ces échecs et à réaliser son idée. J’encourage les étudiant(e)s à jouer et à explorer les idées en profondeur. Vous ne pouvez pas échouer si vous jouez ; seulement apprendre. C’est ainsi que j’aborde mon propre travail. ….

….I grew up along the St. Lawrence River in Brockville, Ontario and the river and its nearby islands were my playground. My friends and I would camp on the islands or explore the shoreline, all the while growing a deep appreciation for what the environment had to share. We weren’t angels by any means, but we wouldn’t leave our trash around. It just wasn’t done. So later in life when I started to explore the backcountry campgrounds in Ontario’s provincial parks I started to notice more and more litter. I took action after a particularly bad experience in a remote campsite in Lake Superior Provincial Park. I found so much plastic on that remote beach that I just couldn’t ignore it. That event led me on a two year exploration of how plastic gets into and moves through the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence River. ..J’ai grandi le long du fleuve Saint-Laurent à Brockville, en Ontario. Le fleuve et ses iles voisines étaient mon terrain de jeu. Mes amis et moi campions sur les iles ou explorions le rivage. Ceci en développant une profonde appréciation de ce que l’environnement avait à partager. Nous n’étions certainement pas des anges, mais nous ne laissions pas trainer nos ordures. Cela ne se faisait pas. Ainsi, plus tard, en explorant les terrains de camping de l’arrière-pays dans les parcs provinciaux de l’Ontario, j’ai remarqué de plus en plus d’ordures. Après une expérience particulièrement désagréable dans un camping isolé du parc provincial du lac Supérieur, j’ai décidé d’agir. J’ai trouvé tellement de plastique sur cette plage isolée que je ne pouvais l’ignorer. Cet évènement m’a incité à explorer, pendant deux ans, la façon dont le plastique pénètre et se déplace dans les Grands Lacs et le long du fleuve Saint-Laurent. ….

….You’ve completed a couple residencies recently. Can you tell us about them, and share how they have allowed you to push your practice? ..Vous avez récemment effectué des résidences artistiques. ….To date I’ve participated in a artist residency at the School Of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa in 2018-2019. At that point and time I had completed two self-exploration type projects and Plastic Beach was well underway but I was struggling with how to connect with an audience. I wasn’t well versed in how to reach out and grow interest in my work. So for six months on every Friday I would sit down with Michael Davidge (Ottawa Art Gallery) and go through how to create an submission for a gallery opening, or create a grant application. We explored institutional, private, and commercial galleries and what they offered. This experience showed me that you can create interest in your practice and that you can control your creative path. ..À ce jour, j’ai participé à une résidence d’artiste à la School Of the Photographic Arts : Ottawa en 2018-2019. J’avais alors terminé deux projets d’auto-exploration et Plastic Beach progressait bien. Toutefois, je me demandais comment communiquer avec le public. J’avais peu de talent pour toucher et susciter l’intérêt du public pour mon travail. Tous les vendredis pendant six mois, je m’asseyais avec Michael Davidge (de la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa) et étudiais comment créer une soumission pour ouvrir une galerie, ou comment demander une subvention. Nous avons exploré les galeries institutionnelles, privées et commerciales et ce qu’elles offraient. Cette expérience m’a démontré que l’on peut susciter de l’intérêt pour son art et contrôler son cheminement créatif. ….
….In 2020 I was to participate in a residency at the Klondike Institute of Art & Culture but the pandemic threw a wrench into the works and now I’m looking forward to this opportunity later in 2021. I’ll go into this residency with the goal to continue the Head-On series with a northern component. ..En 2020, je devais participer à une résidence au Klondike Institute of Art & Culture, mais la pandémie y a mis un frein. ….Like many people I had a rough time during the initial stages of the Covid-19 pandemic. A lost job opportunity and a creative vacuum culminated in my inability to create. I was unmotivated by the images that I was seeing like empty streets, and people using PPE. I took some time and realised that I wanted to explore what the victims of the disease was facing. For obvious reasons going into an ICU was out of the question but through the help of one of my cousins I was directed to a public data base of Covid-19 cases. This site was created to assist healthcare workers identify the effects of the new virus. I found this willingness to share information freely encouraging and positive in all the messy negativity that were the early stages of the pandemic. ..Comme plusieurs, j’ai vécu une période difficile durant les premières phases de la pandémie de Covid-19. Une occasion d’emploi perdue et un vide créatif m’ont empêché de créer. Les images que je voyais, comme des rues vides ou les gens qui utilisaient des EPI (équipement de protection individuelle), ne me motivaient pas. Je me suis accordé un peu de temps et j’ai réalisé que je voulais explorer ce que les victimes de la maladie confrontaient. De toute évidence, pas question d’entrer dans une unité de soins intensifs. Mais avec l’aide d’un cousin, on m’a orienté vers une base de données publique des cas de Covid-19. Ce site a été créé pour aider le personnel de la santé à identifier les effets du nouveau virus. Cette volonté de partager librement l’information me paraissait encourageante et positive parmi la négativité désordonnée qui a marqué les premiers stades de la pandémie. ….
